An abundance of timber slowly grows in this vast area- primarily Douglass Fir, Spruce, Pine and a few hardwoods. After taking his first Forest Stewardship class and learning about the health of his own forest, owner Matt Ridgeway saw the potential of offering sustainably harvested lumber. Working in his own forest and with other forest landowners, he has improved the health of the forest while also providing a product which the customer can feel good about. Likewise, Ridgeway Milling & Custom Wood buys wood from loggers destined for the slash pile and turns arches, crotches and pistol butts into fine furniture. Very little of a tree is wasted; wood chips and scrap wood goes to heating a wood burning boiler for a year round, organic winter greenhouse.

In addition to new lumber, Ridgeway Milling & Custom Wood supplies reclaimed wood and recutting services. Working with ranchers around the area, we revive decaying barns, sheds and homes by dismantling the usable wood and often exchanging new wood for old weathered wood. Thus, creating a cyclical partnership between the new and the old.

The effects of sunlight, wind, rain and snow give natural wood a beautiful expression of lustrous grain, dense knots, and long-ago eaten away wormholes. Ridgeway Milling and Custom Wood searches throughout our region for reclaimed wood buildings that have been scultped by time.

Natural wood fits with the landscape of homes in southwestern Montana. Yellow grasses, blue skies, and brown woods can all be seen in the deep texture of reclaimed wood. An architectural choice to use reclaimed and restored wood gives a house- the interior or the exterior- a location-based feeling, as if its meant to be there.

Ridgeway Milling offers a selection of species of wood- from proud Douglas Fir, to light white pine, to exotics such as picklewood and mahogany. Browse below for a list of our in-stock items and call us if you have questions.
